The Essential Checklist
- Valid Georgia driver's license — Required by law for the test drive and for the title transfer.
- Proof of income — Most recent 2 to 4 pay stubs, OR 3 months of bank statements showing direct deposit, OR a current Social Security / disability award letter.
- Proof of residence — A current utility bill, lease agreement, or mortgage statement with your name and Georgia address.
- Proof of insurance — Active Georgia auto insurance is required to drive off the lot. Most dealers can quote you on the spot if you don't have it.
- Down payment — Cash, debit card, certified check, or money order. Personal checks are rarely accepted for the down.
- References — Most BHPH dealers ask for 4 to 6 personal references with names, phone numbers, and relationships.
Helpful Extras
These aren't always required but speed up your approval:
- Last year's tax return or W-2 — Especially helpful if your income is seasonal or self-employment.
- Phone bill in your name — Demonstrates account stability.
- Trade-in title (if trading) — You need the title in your name to trade a vehicle.
- List of monthly expenses — Some dealers will ask to verify your debt-to-income ratio.
Income Requirements at Most Georgia BHPH Dealers
While requirements vary, the most common minimums you'll encounter:
- Minimum monthly income: $1,500 – $2,000 (gross, before taxes)
- Time at current job: 3 to 6 months minimum
- Time at current address: 3 months minimum (some require 6)
- Age requirement: 18 or older (Georgia law)
If you don't meet these on your own, a co-signer who does can often get you approved.
